A Crown of Ash and Snow Snippet
“If what Nesryn says is true, then why save me?”
Startled, Ryn sucks in a sharp inhale through her teeth, then promptly darts her eyes away from Cloud. She rolls her tongue over the tip of her fang, floundering for an answer. If she’s completely honest with herself, she doesn’t have an answer other than it was Cloud.
Maybe the small, sickly child entombed deep inside her is screaming to protect the one good thing ever born.
Maybe it’s the ever-present deep yearning to be near Cloud, even at the cost of Ryn’s own life.
“You meant something to me, once.” Ryn averts her gaze from Cloud’s prying eyes, her hands clenching into fists at her sides. “You gave me my best memories and were there for some of my worst. You’re good, Cloud. The best.”
Stricken, Cloud’s eyes widen. “Nesryn.”
Ryn chuckles thinly, shrugging and pushing her long hair off her shoulder. “Don’t think too much about it. Think of it as repaying a life debt.”
“A… life debt?”
“Hm.” Ryn’s smile broadens. “For taking in such a sickly whelp such as me at the Pavilion.”
Cloud presses her painted lips together. “Not a life debt. Was not a favor. The Lander Coven did not help Nesryn in the end. We failed you.”
Sighing heavily, Ryn turns her head away, strangling down words she cannot say even when they threaten to spill out of her. “It wasn’t your fault I jumped.”
Silence.
“Lena is a shell of the woman she used to be,” Cloud says quietly. “She mourns you, and you let us all believe you were dead.”
At the mention of her sister, Ryn’s chest hurts, and it has nothing to do with her injury. She crosses her arms over her chest, eyes snapping back to Cloud’s face. “It wasn’t a lie—none of it was.”
“Nesryn…”
Snarling, Ryn steps closer, ignoring Cloud’s dizzying scent and the irregular beating of her heart. “If you tell her anything about this before Kaiza orders the execution, I’ll never forgive you, Cloud. Ryn is dead.” Her lips twist into a sinister smile. “I don’t have to be buried in the ground for that to be true.”
